I am hearing some loud explosion noise outside my house(or somewhere), when I turn the heat ON. I have a gas furnace in basement.

Can I call the HWA and have them check this for me ?
I am hoping I should not be paying them more than my $100 deductible right ?

What are the things to see when buying exhaust fan?

I am replacing my kitchen cabinets, my exhaust fans duct work will be exposed for a short distance before going into the attic and then through the roof. I am looking for suggestions on how best to cover the exposed duct and with what material looks best?

glass tile, what kind of adhesive? hole in backer board how to fix before i tile? & tile over paint?
i am trying to tile kitchen back splash in an old house. after peeling off old peeling wall paper and removing the exhaust cover i find the backer board has glue on it, and the board has cup size hole in the top corner, the exhaust fan hole is huge almost the size of the cover. what can i do to remove the glue ( could i try nail polish remover) and what can i do about these holes in backer board? could i build up with joint tape and the adhesive or grout? i was thinking luon but the stuff at store seemed 1/4 think and that would bring wall out to the window casing. and make my surface uneven.**** Also my glass tile is net backed and every jar or pre mixed adhesive says not for glass but mine has the net and the guy at store says that it is fine, and i have non sanded grout Is IT OK to use these or will tile drop off wall??????

Hi,

Lately, I find dead bugs on the metal slope covering my kitchen exhaust fan.

This happens when I fail to wipe down the oil coating the metal, after I have fried something (which is like everyday).

These bugs were earlier found in the turmeric and coriander in my spice box, but I dont find them there anymore, and merely dead on any oily surface (even cast iron skillets I fail to wash at night)

The bugs are tiny and brown with wings, the ends are rather blunt and not sharp like in the rice bugs.

Any tips on getting rid of these bugs?

My standard pest repellant is borax, sugar and water, but it seems to do nothing for these bugs.

I had an energy evaluation done and when the kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans were turned on there was actually a negative air pressure balance. So I'm wondering if I should be letting a bit more air in intentionally, so less comes in through cracks where I don't want it to. Especially in our cold Manitoba winters.

I plan on moving soon and will need to stock my kitchen properly. There is plenty of storage space. The apartment includes a refrigerator, range with vent, and also an exhaust fan. The stove is an older 36" model with storage space. I plan to use this to store my bake ware. Nonetheless, what appliances besides a microwave should I purchase?

Has anyone ever stayed in a haunted cabin in the Pigeon Forge/Sevierville area of Tennessee?
For years my family has stayed in that area and never had anything out of sorts happen. Actually, we've never had anything odd like that happen ever.
This past Christmas my husband and I along with my parents and sister stayed in a cabin called "Windswept". It is 3 stories, with spiral staircases that were very difficult to get up and down. We had our two Huskies with us, and they refused to go up or down the stairs. On our first night there was a horrible storm, and water poured through the glass wall of windows. On the last night, I was having a difficult time sleeping. The bedroom door was closed, but the light under the microwave in the kitchen was shining under the door. From where I was lying in bed I could see the door, and suddenly a shadow passed by. I thought it was a family member or my sister's Husky walking around out there and didn't think much of it. My Husky jumped up and ran to sniff under the door as the shadow passed by again, and this time paused for a bit before moving on.
The same night, my sister heard someone playing pool and thought it was my husband. Problem was, he was exhausted and never left the room.
My Mother heard the TV turn on, and said it kept getting louder. When she went out it was static. She turned it off and went back to bed. A while later it happened again.
Fans turned on that had been turned off, as well as lights.
In the morning, I asked who had been in the kitchen...no one had. My sister's Husky had been downstairs shut in a bedroom with my parents the whole night. Even if she had gotten out, she was scared to death of those spiral staircases and refused to go near them.
That was all a little too strange for us, needless to say we were glad we were leaving that morning!
I'm curious if anyone has ever had things happen in that same cabin. I've searched online but can't find anything. I've emailed the company who rented out the cabin and haven't heard anything back yet.
Has anyone had similar experiences in that area?
the_emro - If you were paying attention...it was light from the microwave shining underneath the door...not the moon.

Steve G - Why do you bother?

Hi, what is the name of that Fan that sucks steam, smoke , odor in the kitchen stove?
thanks!

I have an over the range hood microwave. We are doing a kitchen remodel and are adding a hood over the stove. We are going to have a built in microwave. Can I use the existing hood microwave as a built in instead? Do we disconnect the light and the exhaust fan and use it as a built in?

she is overweight i might add, shes an 8 year old 130lb. Bloodhound yesterday she was roaming and relaxing in the yard for maybe 15-20 min only its about 90 degrees out then the rest of the day and today she doesn't seem right last night she slept on the kitchen tiled floor(she never does thatt normally she would sleep on a carpeted floor or the couch) she also seems to be a little less active and right now my house is set at 72 and there are fans on im wondering what signs of being dogs being heat exhausted are and well what you can do (btw she is Not panting...)

My partner and I are getting a new kitchen, and where the current exhaust fan is in the roof, is above a window. So we can't get rid of this, and put in a rangehood, or it will look silly covering the window. I am sure that you can get rangehoods that don't have to go up and through to the roof/outside though.. As since we can't use the existing hole in the roof, I don't know that I want to make another one... I am in Australia, so if anyone knows of anything, or any solutions we could try- everything and anything would be appreciated!

ok so i asked this question and someone says im saying Anthony Bourdains own words. So let me see. I guess i say these things and ask this question because we all work hard and care about the food we put out and go home every night sweaty, exhausted, we hate the customers yet we care about the food that were making for them. We work long hours into the night and go to work the next day to do it again. Why would anyone do that for a cheap pay check. Now lets see i guess i must be quoting another cook or something right? or maybe its because ive been cooking for a while and feel the same way as some other cooks and have the same opinions and would like some answers. Now will someone answer this question and tell me in their OWN words why they think we do it for a low check. And once again if your not a line cook dont answer it. If your trying to criticize my question or are accusing me of copying someone elses own words then piss off because obviously you havent cooked and your just an obsessed fan of cooking books. I love Anthony Bourdains Kitchen Confidential but hes not the only one who feels this way or has some questions or observations.

I am probably going to be remodeling my kitchen soon and would like to place my gas range within my island. I have seen pictures of this with no fan or hood above the stove. Do you necessarily need an exhaust fan above your stove?

I have a outdoor kitchen and sometimes the smoke gets very bad under the covered patio and in the house. I would like an easy fix.

We have an ancient GE JVM140001 over-the-range microwave oven that is broken - it seems to work perfectly (lights, timer, noise, etc.)........ except that the food inside it doesn't actually get any hotter. We want to replace it with a newer model.

It is important to note that one of the current unit's features that is important to us is the exhaust fan, which can be turned on to vent out smoke and smells from whatever is cooking on the stove beneath it.

So..... what make and model of microwave oven is there on the market that (a) would fit into the existing space occupied by our current microwave (i.e. it is surrounded by existing kitchen cabinets on the top and sides), and (b) has an exhaust fan for the stove it will be mounted over? The cheaper the better, please. ;-)

She laid two eggs which have hatched and the chicks are about a week old now. Here are my questions:
a. How long will it take before the baby birds start to fly?
b.How soon after that can I clear the nest away? Its a health hazard. c. I can't board the ledge up because of the fan. Are there any "natural" repellents I can spray on the ledge to deter further nests from being built?

My wife and I are re-doing the kitchen, and we bought an over-the-range microwave to replace our old exhaust fan/light combo.

The old hood was hard wired into the house's AC system, and the new microwave requires a plug.

I could install a box on the existing wire no problem, but while playing the "breaker game" (you know, where your wife stands in the kitchen, and you flip breakers until the correct light goes off) I noticed that it's on the same circuit as the living room lights, TV, dining room, stereo, etc. - so it's a lot of things on a circuit already to be adding to.

I've been in the attic, and the area where the new plug would be is fairly easily accessible (no tearing out drywall) and it's about a 30 foot run to the circuit breaker box in the garage, through the attic.

I'm a former mechanic and PC technician, and I have a lot of tools - so i'm not scared of DIY - but i'll be honest when I say that the circuit breaker box scares the crap out of me.

I'd like to hear from anyone in the industry, what a professional electrician might charge to run the wire, and install an outlet box. I know there are 100 things i'm not taking into account, but a ballpark figure is all i'm after. I want to know, when they quote me, if i'm being screwed or not.

I live in the Atlanta area.

Thanks!

My partner and I and our 7 month old baby got our first rental house 8 months ago. It is a tiny little studio apartment above a garage.
Ever since we moved in there has been nothing but problems and I am just wondering what you would consider uninhabitable circumstances to live in so we can legally terminate our lease. Or just negligence from the owner and real estate agent.

Here is what has been happening:

- Extreme ant and cockroach problem. They are in the kitchen, showers, all over the walls. We have cleaned and cleaned but they will not go away.

- Black mold on the walls.

- Leaking roof and wet carpet.

- Lino that doesn't fit the floor in kitchen. It can lift up so food and bugs get stuck under.

- Rotten timber, glass, mesh, wire and wood under the patio causing bugs to come up.

- Holes in tiles where ants are coming from.

- Holes underneath cupboards.

- No laundry or communal laundry.

- No exhaust fan in bathroom.

- Rubbish, cardboard boxes, old toys left all over the property from previous owners.

- Whenever the tenants in the front house close the garage our whole house shudders.

- Our real estate agent and owner take too long to reply to emails and phone calls. We have to keep reminding them and chasing it up.
The are also chinese so it is very hard to communicate with them.
They have said many times that they are going to fix things but they never do and they seem like all they care about is saving money.

- They also sent around a trades person to measure up the blind and he didn't bring any tools such as his tape measure. He measured with his arms.

Thanks for any help :)

I hate Australia! Bugger it and it's ridiculously ridiculous whether! It's 11:34pm right now and I swear, it's literally about 40°C outside and Mum's futile fan is making it about 48°C in our lounge room.
I can't believe it, back to school tomorrow. I wonder how exhausting year 9 will be, and then year 10 the next, then year 11 and then year 12! How repulsive! All this thinking about school is giving me a headache, now I'm even starting to feel faint.
"Cassandra Darleen Wright!" My mothers squeaky voice woke me from my horrific daze about school. She must be irritated with me about something, that's the only time she calls me by my full name, and her voice goes higher than it normally is. "Yes?" I tried to sound civil. "Have you cleaned your bedroom yet?" What an expected question from a parent. "No Mum, I'll go do it now." I sighed loudly. I heard a sarcastic laugh rumble from her throat and then I trailed off to my bedroom.
After I opened my bedroom door, I now realize why she was laughing. My room is entirely covered with clothes and even a bit of rubbish, even my bed is camouflaged in mess as well. It can't be this bad, can it? I opened and closed my eyes a few times. Nope, it is this bad. I might just leave it until tomorrow, maybe it's time for bed I need all the beauty sleep I can get for tomorrow. Ugh. I don't know how I'm going to sleep in this whether though, I guess I won't know until I try.
The most amount of sleep I got last night was an hour and a half. And even worse, my hair looks ludicrous! I dawdled back down our never ending staircase into our kitchen.
Dad's home! I ran over to him and gave him the biggest hug I could muscle up.

That's all I've got to so far, so tell me what you think. Oh and is it all in present tense? Thankss.

The exhaust fan in my older model JennAir kitchen range makes a squealing, rattling noise about 60% of the time. Turning it on/off several times usually reverses it back to being quiet. WD 40 solves the problem temporarily. Any suggestions on how to permanently fix this? Thanks.

I'm in a top floor apartment of an "otherwise" well-maintained building. A couple of days ago, the exhaust fan in my bathroom started dripping some sort of brown liquid, and my landlord said he'd fix the problem asap, and not to worry.

Since then, the dripping has stopped from the fan in the bathroom, but today I noticed there is more brown liquid leaking where the smoke alarm is installed in the ceiling near the entryway, and I discovered that one of the light globes in my kitchen is now half full of brown liquid!!!

I called the landlord again, and he's sending someone to come and investigate again in the morning.

Can someone please tell me what this brown stuff could be? I live on the top floor, so it's not from the apartment above.

Also, could this crap be toxic?

Thanks in advance for your input.

My kitchen Range Hood, (Kenmore 233.52349590) with about 300 CFM pulling power, from the fan to outside room, with full power, there is only about 20 to 30 degree for the lid of the window to open up. I complained to builder of my house, I was told that was the biggest they can put in.

What size of the exhaust should I have
1) Since my kitchen connects to my large living room and sunroom, total open area ~800 square feet.
2) From the hoot to out side, total ~15 feet with two 90 degree angles with 4 inches duct. Each stage should have some power reduction.

Can I put an external exhaust fan as assistance? since
1) I don’t need to take part my kitchen
2) Noise in the room is reduced since the external fan is in outside my room.

Is any limitation for installing the second fan?
1) If I need 1000 CFM total, if the first one is 300 CFM, can I put the second one with 700 CFM?
2) In this case, does the first one become resistance of the second one? I would not get 1000 CFM pulling force.

Do I have other choise and option?
If I want to hire contractor, who should I call?

If you happened to get a hotel room right above the hotel's kitchen, and you can hear noises through the floor until about 11:30 pm at night, would you complain and ask to move to another room? The noises consist of the kitchen's exhaust fan, banging pots and pans, voices, and one of the lamp shades vibrates all day until the kitchen closes down for the night.

Do you think that a hotel should even have hotel room located right above a kitchen?

I have an older kitchen and I want to replace my exhaust fan with an over the range microwave. I was wondering if I could use the wiring that was used for the exhaust fan to hook up the microwave. If not, what type of wiring would I need to run? How would I do it? I don't want to call an electrician.

We purchased a new Jenn Air stove that has an exhaust fan in the middle of the cooktop (island stove, no hood). I'm noticing a horrible odor in my kitchen and it's coming from the fan! I took out the filter and washed it, and washed out the inside of the cavity in the stove, but it still stinks. Anyone had this issue???

This is gonna be a long one, but I could really use any help you may be able to give me! Let me start by giving a little background info before I get into what happened. I'm a female, 21 years old. I'm currently on the Medifast diet, I weigh 240 and have lost 36 pounds while on this diet. Exercise really isn't part of the initial stage of this diet, because I only consume about 800 calories a day while on this program. So they say that only mild exercise should be done (walking for about 15 minutes a day)... well yesterday I played hardcore tennis for an hour..and was extremely tired and exhausted. And today I decided to get on the treadmill. I had some cramps and felt extremely exhausted before I started but figured it was from my period and I should stop being a lazy bum, and I got on. I did some jogging for 20 minutes, I did some sprinting and incline, and then did the bike for 5 and then did 200 crunches, all on an empty stomach..with no food or water. I was extremely tired afterwards and could barely move... I went to the kitchen to get water because I felt HORRIBLE and immediately knew something was wrong. I knew i was about to faint so I sat down and then i started having extreme pains in my abdomen..something like menstrual cramps but 1000x worse. I became dizzy, and was going to faint numerous times but kept my self alert enough to not pass out... i was having extreme shortness of breathe. I couldn't talk or move. I fell in the hallway... The pain I was feeling was by far THE WORST pain I have ever felt in my life. My face and lips were EXTREMELY WHITE. I started having cold sweat and chills and sweating all at the same time. After calling 911, my mom poured ice water on me and gave me sugar-water and orange juice because she thought my blood sugar level was low (since i cant have any sugar on the medifast diet). The pains would stop for about 20 seconds and then start again... in 20 second intervals. when they would start it would trigger the dizziness, shortness of breathe, sweating, chills, and fainting symptons all over again. I basically got naked and slept in the den with the fan on high for 40 minutes. After about 3 cups of water..2 cups of sugar-water and some dates, bread and a cookie... the color came back in my face and my cramps became less severe. I have NEVER experienced anything like that before... I thought I was having a heart attack.. or an asthma attack... which I wouldn't really know how either feels cause I've never had either.. It was by far the scariest experience I've had. Does anyone have ANY idea what that was all about?? Anything would help as I've been searching online and have found nothing with all those symptoms. Maybe it was too much exercise on my low-calorie diet.. maybe it was low blood pressure and glucose levels and with my menstrual cycle on top of that, it made my body go crazy... I really don't know. Please give me any ideas you may have.

Sincerely,
Worried from Cali
Stacie..ya i threw up..but because I had not eaten anything prior to working out it was only water. And ya I had weird diarrhea the nite before and during the incident! All day today i was worried it would happen again... so i held off on working out. I totally feel what you're going through..especially if this is a reoccuring thing for you! It was THE worst feeling. Has your doctor told you what could trigger it? or what makes it worse or better? I thought it was an asthma attack because I just couldnt breathe or move and i was turning white/blue..but i don't know where the stomach cramps and diarrhea and vomiting come into play...

Can anyone tell me medically the risks of having mass amounts of naphthalene scattered throughout my ceiling, even sitting on exhaust fan covers in kitchen and bathroom. The owner has just done this hoping to deter possoms but now my house stinks of mothballs. Is it toxic to inhale or just ingest. Thankd

Can anyone please tell me the risks of having mass amounts of Naphthalene crystals scattered throughout my ceiling, even sitting on exhaust fan covers in the kitchen and bathroom. I have 2 rooms that are beside each other,a blue and pink room. The pink room gets very hot in the afternoon but the blue room stays moderately cool. The pink room has an exhaust and the bule room has a fan that can suck or blow air out. A wall fan is installed in the pink room but it's still hot inside. The only source of cool air is from the kitchen which is connected to the blue room. How can i ventilate the pink room? Should i add another exhaust fan in the pink room? What should i do? I'll be thankful for any solution that u can give...

My kitchen (range hood) exhaust fan is connected to an outlet on the wall outside the house. The outlet is pretty big (7 inch x 7 inch) and open all the time. How can I cover the outlet to preserve the cool (or warm) air inside the house when the exhaust fan is idle, while still allow it to open when the fan is working? Is there any thing I can install such that the outlet is opened only when the fan is working?

Sunday night we accidentally burnt a potato in the microwave. (I learned never again to use the potato setting button...geez) It caused our apartment to get very smokey and while it cleared out just fine, it still smells. Our apartment is a studio with a small bedroom that cannot be classified as such because there are no windows in there. There are two bay windows in the living room area with two small crank out windows beneath that and that's it. Because of this, there's no cross breeze, so it's harder to air out.

We've febreezed the furniture twice, washed all the linens that were out at the time of the incident, cleaned out the microwave, and changed the filter in the central air unit. After I got home from work last night I opened up the windows (which have to stay closed during this heat wave or it'll wind up being about 110 in there) and put a window fan exhausting the air outward. I also put a fan in the entryway to the bedroom, and one on the kitchen counter...
all facing towards the front windows. I let them go for hours and it seemed to help somewhat. This morning when I woke up, I noticed the smell was still there a bit. Is there anything we could do, or any product that we could use that would aid in getting rid of the stench?

i just moved apartments and my old one had a window in the kitchen, this doesn't, how do i rid of fish smell??

my kitchen is on the inside of my apartment and my old one was on the outside wall, now after i get done fishing and i fillet/cook my fish my kitchen smells like fish for days, before i just opened up the outside window.

what is the BEST method for ridding of this fish smell, please don't say "exhaust" fan, that does little for me to rid of fish/shrimp oders.

thanks in advance.

I have an indoor laundry room that was previously an outdoor one. It had only one door to it and it was outside. This door has been closed off. It is attached to our house, not insulated, and the door leads from our kitchen out into it now. Confusing?! I know. My question is... It makes our kitchen so hot, because it is now basically an indoor laundry room with no ventilation. When the kitchen door is closed, which it is all day, the laundry room becomes the same temp as outside. What kind of ventilation system should we get? We need the cheap route... We are first time home owners!

Moved into my dad's crappy 1960's brick house. Have torn out all carpeting, painted, and cleaned. When we took down wallpaper (40yrs old) found some mold spots. A few areas of plaster crumbling on ceiling. Fixed and painted those. We got a new roof last month and installed two automatic exhaust roof/attic fans (one for heat and one for humidity). There is an occasional smell of mold in my daugthers bedroom, actually on the side away from the single window, so really on the interior of house. I can't really tell where it is coming from, but it is generally on one side of room. The bedroom is right in between two others. No where near a bathroom, not above kitchen. Smell is not always there. If there was a water problem, and the new roof fixed it, will the mold go away on its own?

If i leave the exhaust fan on for too long (12+ hours) will it reduce the amount of oxygen in my apartment? I'm asking this because we've left our kitchen exhaust fan on for the past 24 hours to get rid of paint fumes in my living room. If i stay in the kitchen for too long, i get light-headed, i'm unable to breathe properly and feel slow both physically and mentally. Could this be attributed to something else?
Thanks

Glue trap being a sticky bit of cardboard.

We havent seen ny dead mice, but the glue trap has caught since yesterday. One glue trap (20cm by 15cm) caught 2 mice the other glue trap caught one. They are all in our small kitchen, and all seem to congregate in the same area.

They may also come out a whole which goes behind the cupboard and fridge. What should we use to block this hole.

What else can we do?

We have cleaned up the kitchen, open the window and leave the exhaust fan on. All opened food packages are kept in the fridge.

my fiance is from India and I have to say everything they eat has to have a million onions in it. I have a small kitchen and a exhaust fan but its not keeping up with the fried onion smells taht come from his food. My house, my clothes, my coats, my baby, my dog and cats are all smelling like one big onion. HELP ME!!! What can I do? I open windows plray febreeze, wash more than normal, but people still wrinkle there noses at me in the grocery store. Apparently smelling like onions in india wasnt a problem. It is here.

wall mounted microwave in the kitchen has an exhaust fan but there is no outlet in the wall for the fan to throw the smoke out, what gives?
i am talking about the smoke from the stove not from the microwave.i hope it clear the confusion

I painted my bathroom last night. How long before I can use the shower in there? There is no exhaust fan and I used latex kitchen and bathroom paint.

Hello. I have quite a small kitchen (maybe 12 feet by 6 feet). It's getting gutted in a week or two to be fit with something a bit more space-saving.

The room has always been frightfully cold and I'm sure the three air bricks are part of the problem. If I turn one into the exhaust for the extractor fan and lose the third one, would you expect the remaining air brick should suffice to keep the room from getting too humid?

Exhaust fan duct goes into the cupboard and vents to outside wall, inside of cupboard has a lot of water collecting, even when we are not cooking or using the fan. Duct work is flexible metal and outside vent cover is flat with flaps
